In *The Great Emptiness*, the fifth volume in the *Fundamentals of Buddhist Thought* series, Geshe Tashi Tsering offers the reader an outstanding introduction to the core philosophical teachings of Mahayana Buddhism. The Great Emptiness does not imply a nihilistic view of the world, but rather the idea that there is no permanent entity in individual phenomena or beings.
Everything exists in interdependent relation to a multitude of causes and conditions.
Understanding emptiness allows us to see the world as a realm of infinite possibilities, rather than as a static system.
Just as a table is made of pieces of wood, and the wood comes from trees, and the trees depend on air, water and earth, so the world is composed of a marvellous interdependence that extends right down to our own mind and consciousness. In short, Geshe Tashi Tsering guides the reader towards a genuine understanding of these infinite possibilities.
GESHE TASHI TSERING is renowned for his ability to make Buddhist philosophy accessible and relevant to modern life.
He was born in Tibet in 1958 and received his Geshe Lharam degree (equivalent to a doctorate in divinity) at Sera Mey Monastery in India.
For a decade, he has been a teacher and spiritual guide at the Jamyang Buddhist Centre in London and has taught courses at other Buddhist centres around the world.
At the request of Lama Thubten Zopa Rinpoche, the spiritual director of the Foundation for the Preservation of the Mahayana Tradition (FPMT), he became Resident Teacher at the Jamyang Buddhist Centre in London in 1994, where he established ‘Fundamentals of Buddhist Thought’, which has become one of the core courses in the FPMT programme. He has been teaching this course in England and across Europe since 1997.
